Who were "eclectic students"?

An eclectic student was a student that had no plans of receiving a degree from Davidson through the regular enrollment with the 4-year academic schedule. Usually, eclectic students only enrolled to pick up information from one or two classes, but occasionally the eclectic students would end up staying more than a semester or even a couple of years.
